The rich spectrum of Jazz music has in part its origin in the oppressed circumstances where African Americans lived in the turn of the 20th century. After deportation from their native Africa they were turned into slaves and were expected to adopt the religion of their new masters. In the process they leaned on their own tradition and formed a new style of rythmic singing emphasizing religion. Jazz was enriched by yet another dimension, the Gospel.
Gospel music has since then spred virtually throughout the world although its most profound meaning is still best captured and interpreted by African Americans.
The Old Time Jazz Band endeavors to maintain and promote traditional jazz music. This recording aims at featuring the connection between Gospel music and Jazz. The recording contains the most popular numbers performed at several Finnish churches over the last two years.
